Siemens has developed and launched the Siemens Real-Time Locating Systems (RTLS) at its sites to curb the spread of COVID-19. Every employee at the plant wears a sensor, allowing the system to simulate the behavior and movement of workers and determine optimal layouts for workplaces. The system also warns staff of social distancing violations.

The RTLS system tracks individual contacts among staff members if one of the employees is diagnosed with the disease. Siemens said that the system takes into account two important aspects — restrictions and anonymity. RTLS can be used in workplaces, but there may be areas at the company where tracking may not be possible, such as recreation areas. The second aspect is that all tracked data is completely anonymous, and used solely to optimize the employees’ work.
