Tesla CEO Elon Musk has pledged to halve the cost of the batteries used in his cars by the end of 2021. He aims to create an electric car with a price tag below $25,000 (21,370 €).

Musk’s plan is based on improving battery production efficiency and saving on raw materials. The plan is to reduce the cost of raw materials by purchasing lithium deposits and efficiently processing the raw materials instead of purchasing a finished cell.

Tesla also plans to use the new 4,680 battery format, which stores 5 times more energy, increases the output power 6 times, and increases the range by 16 %. And new cathode and anode production technologies will increase the capacity and reduce the cost of battery production.

Musk also plans to save money by scaling up battery production. In total, Tesla plans to produce 100 gigawatt-hours of cells by 2022 and 3 terawatt-hours by 2030.

Also, Tesla technology can be applied to industry. Surplus electricity generated by wind turbines and solar panels needs to be stored somewhere. Capacious and cheap batteries will allow faster introduction of green technologies into industry.

Would you like to switch to a green electric vehicle?
